Page 2: the front door speakers

The 21 yr old stock speakers were not at all in good shape. They litterally disentegrated when I touched them while removing them.

I ran new speaker wires to all the speakers. The stock wiring was still in fine condition, I just figured it would be easier to run my own wires since I was going to have to wire in all the crossovers for the component sets. I also already had all the wire laying around from a previous stereo project, so I didn't have to go buy any. I pulled them through into the doors the same way as I did the window switch wires.

This whole time I had been thinking of where I was going to put the 4 crossovers required for the 6 speakers I was going to be putting in front. I had pulled out all of the glovebox to run the passenger door speaker wires, and while sitting there staring at the dash I realized that the car didn't have a passenger airbag since its an 86, yet the dash was the same. So I looked underneath, and was quite excited to find the space to be completely empty. I'll come back to this later.

Pictures showing how I had to cut out material to mount the 4" speakers in the passenger door. Apparently a 4" speaker is wider than a 4"x6" speaker. Damn audio companies.

In the process of cutting the passenger door speaker stuff, I found out that dremels with cutting wheels in fact do cut skin.

No real blood, so I think I might have melted the skin back together from friction when I cut it. Or something like that. Either way, the cut was only turning red 10min later.

10 min later it was still barely bleeding

Now my car has real metal flake paint! Good thing I have a shop vac.

metallic flake paint anyone?

Pictures of cutting the driver side speaker hole. The stupid stock foam gasket thing was a real bitch to get off because it was so old and torn apart. Two things learned while doing this: 1. taking a picture while holding a grinding dremel with one hand is hard, 2. sparks from said grinding dremel do in fact light paper towels on fire (note the brown hole in the 3rd pic). The paper towel did do a good job of keeping all the shavings outside of the door though, unlike the passenger side. That was a fun time cleaning up...

At this point the car was getting filled with a bunch of tools and other stuff from the stereo project (the rear was filled with stuff from the headgasket project), so I started moving stuff out of the way.

Unfortunatly the only open space in the garage was my dad's bmw, so it became a storage space. He luckily was on a business trip.

After getting the 4" speakers installed I put the door panels back on and installed the door tweeters. The passenger side one is messed up and warped out for some reason, so I'll eventually either try to reshape it with some heat or get another piece and make another one.
