Billthe3's 951 Stereo Project
Page 1: moving the window switches
When I upgraded the stereo I wanted to do quality speakers, which meant getting some component speakers and not just 2 or 3ways. Since component sets have tweeters that you have to mount seperately, I had to figure out what to do with them. I did not want to cut holes into my door panels, so I mounted the tweeters in a set of door switch pieces. But since the tweeters were now where the switches had been, I would have to move the switches to the center console.

I twisted together some 6 ft strands of 5 wires for each switch in the drivers door to then remote wire the switches in the center console. To twist the wires I held one end in the vice and the other end in a drill, then just spun away.

Here are the switches I was using to connect the wires. I chose these because they were able to hold the 5 wires in one connector, and if I later chose to I would be able to just pull out the wire extensions and connect the window switches back in their original location.

Here are the two window switch connectors in the drivers door. I have no idea why there are five wires, but I didn't feel like figuring out what was what so I just spliced all 5.

I used a cable snake to run some string through the rubber accordian thing between the door and body of the car, and then wrapped the string thuroughly around the wires and pulled them through into the door.

The wires going to the door from the drivers footwell.

Here I've got one of the wires connected up.

Both are now connected.

And the switches are connected at the other end. These connectors I used ended up being a real PITA to use because I kept putting the wires in the wrong slots and the crimped connectors weren't that strong. I think just using some spade or banana connectors would have ended up being easier (and cheaper).

At this time I tested the switches and realized that the passenger side window did not work without the passenger switch hooked up to the wiring. Figures. So I could either re-run the wire for the passenger side window from the passenger side, or just leave the connected passenger switch in the door. I did the later. I wrapped it up in a plastic bag to protect it from the elements and jammed it back into the door.

It seemed like a good idea to wrap up the drivers side wires as well, particularly because the connectors I used didn't seem at all water proof.
